Leonorana #5: Environments (2022)

Leonorana is a publication by Portuguese artist Isabel Carvalho. The title of the magazine comes from Ana Hatherly's “Livro III - LEONORANA (1965-70): Trinta e uma variações temáticas sobre o mote de um vilancete de Luís de Camões”, published in the book Um calculador de Improbabilidades (Quimera, 2001).

The project is a direct tribute to the author. It resumes and updates the central focus of her work, namely concerning the study and experimental practice of the complementarity between verbal and visual languages. Due to her vast visual, literary and academic art experience, Hatherly symbolises the relevance research has in terms of artistic practice and the way it is perceived as knowledge.

After meeting Isabel as a Research Liaison for her residency with NTU Centre for Contemporary Art (Singapore) - which had been converted to a remote one due to Covid-19 - I joined her as a Co-Editor of the fifth issue of Leonorana, which centred on Environments. For this, I worked with Isabel to define the parameters of the issue, assisted with administration and communications, and recommended a curation of Singapore-based contributors.

Thanks to Isabel's persistence, we gave Leonorana its Singapore debut at the Singapore Art Book Fair 2022, where Issue 5 was also launched following two other launches in Porto and Lisbon.
